Associate professor DAI Lan is the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute assigned by East China Normal University, and she is from the International College of Chinese Studies, ECNU. DAI Lan was the former Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Oregon, USA and now is the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Recently, she was interviewed by the magazine of Confucius Institute, Sep. 2017 (No.5 this year), and gave her own perspective of “Experience-Sharing of Confucius Institute on the Introduction of Tai Chi Chuan across the world”:

Since the participants vary greatly at their Tai Chi level, the visiting scholar Professor Kang Qingwu adapts his teaching to students’ abilities and give instructions in person. In early morning, we play Tai Chi Chuan, speak out the terminologies of Kung Fu in Chinese language, exchange understandings of health preservation and even discuss philosophy. The Tai Chi training camp not only brings Chinese culture to the beautiful verdant campus but also triggers a series of activities on Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu, attracting interested individuals and clubs to join it. The Kung Fu club founded by Wu Yanzu (Daniel Wu), a famous movie star and alumnus of the school, takes the initiative to co-organize activities. The coach of the local Leung Martial Arts Club David Leung, who is both well-educated and well-versed in martial arts, is also attracted to be here, seeking for cooperation in introducing Chinese culture.

Tai Chi Chuan connects people of all walks of life in and out of the college town. Their participation contributes to the development of the Confucius Institute, which makes the best of its advantages and avoids its weaknesses and gives full play to cohesiveness, and as a result, the Tai Chi Chuan activities that display the exercise from multiple dimensions and levels are successfully completed. On the Confucius Institute Day of 2014, the “Flash” boxing performance on the square in front of the school museum attracted many audiences. Between spring and summer of 2015, the Pacific Film Festival, supported by the Confucius Institute, organized a series of activities for ten days on the theme of “the Art of Martial Arts”, including film screening, academic lectures and on-the-site performance and instruction by martial arts guru Hu Jianqiang, which enhanced the popularization of martial arts and the understanding of the spirit of martial arts. Over the years, in every large-scale activity in local communities, our partners would always be invited to give boxing performance. With Tai Chi as a carrier, the Confucius Institute is unfolding a new chapter for introducing Chinese culture.
